Federal Tax Relief for Upstate New York & Suffolk County

The IRS has announced that New York winter storm and snowstorm victims now have until May 15, 2023 to file various federal individual and business tax returns and make tax payments.  The counties include Erie, Genesee, Niagara, St. Lawrence and Suffolk Counties.  No penalty will be incurred with respect to any filing and payment deadlines that fall on or after December 23, 2022 through May 14, 2023.

The relief applies to individual, estate and trust income tax returns originally due April 18, 2023, as well as business returns originally due March 15, 2023 and April 18, 2023.  In addition, eligible Taxpayers will have until May 15, 2023 to make 2022 contributions to their IRAs and health savings accounts.  Fourth Quarter 2022 estimates originally due January 17, 2023, and first quarter estimated tax payments originally due April 18, 2023, are now due May 15, 2023.

Currently, the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance has not extended the deadline for NYS taxes.  Those affected by the winter storm must request an extension to file their returns.
